Sanctuary Loft on Minnehaha Parkway is an adaptive reuse of an existing ~1940s church into a 21 unit multifamily housing complex, with an additional 6 units built on site in a new building. The project leverages the Minneapolis 2040 policy that encourages incremental housing density across the city and required substantial effort in advocating for rezoning of the property to allow for multifamily housing.

The existing church assemblage was exploited to both maximize the number of units and to create unique unit types that diversify domestic lifestyles. By minimizing the number of interior corridors to maximize unit square footage, most units are accessible by their own walk-up front door. This ensures a lively outdoor collective space that mediates the thresholds between the public sidewalk and the private interior of a unit.
